TREE PLANTING SETBACK: Police blocks environmental conservation initiative through birthday celebrations

The Every Birthday Tree Day Initiative (EBTDI), a non-political organization founded by Dr. Dennis Daniel Ssemugenyi, aimed at promoting environmental conservation and mitigating climate change through tree planting during birthday celebrations, has faced a setback after police intervention. The initiative seeks to educate and create awareness about the importance of planting trees during birthday celebrations, with the belief that caring for the planet is essential for everyone’s well-being.

The EBTDI had planned an event in Nabweeru Ku Ggombolola on August 2nd, 2025, under the theme, “Planting A Legacy: The EBTDI Guide and Civic Dialogue on Matters Affecting Our Lives.” The event aimed to bring together individuals, communities, and organizations in a shared mission to tackle climate change, restore natural habitats, and create a greener, healthier world. However, the District Police Commander (DPC) of Nansana Municipality, Afande Tom, stopped the event, claiming that it was a political rally.

Ssemakula Richard, the National Coordinator for Dr. Ssemugenyi, expressed disappointment and sadness over the police’s actions. He emphasized that the EBTDI is not a political organization and that there is no politics in celebrating a birthday. He also highlighted the financial losses incurred due to the cancellation of the event, including the payment for the venue, tents, chairs, public address system, food, and drinks.

Lubowa Sam, chairman of Kiggundu Zone, Makerere – Kavule Parish, Kampala City, shared his frustration, stating that the police intervention was not justified as the event was about climate change, which is a national and global concern. He urged the people in power to change their approach and address the issue of deforestation, which is a significant challenge facing the country.

Dr. Dennis Daniel Ssemugenyi, the founder of EBTDI, remains committed to the organization’s mission of promoting environmental conservation through birthday celebrations. He believes that planting trees is an effective way to tackle climate change and restore natural habitats. Despite the setback, the EBTDI plans to continue its efforts to create a greener, healthier world.

Police’s intervention in stopping the EBTDI event raises questions about the freedom of association and the right to peaceful assembly in Uganda especially for a noble cause.
