The 8th edition of the MTN Busoga Masaza Cup kicked off in spectacular fashion on Saturday, July 12th, 2025, as His Majesty the Kyabazinga of Busoga, Dr. William Wilberforce Kadumbula Gabula Nadiope IV, officially opened the tournament at Irundu Township Church of Uganda Primary School grounds in Budiope, Buyende district.
The grand opening drew a large and jubilant crowd, with dignitaries from across the kingdom and national football leadership in attendance. The Kyabazinga was flanked by royal chiefs (Abalangira), Busoga Prime minister Dr. Joseph Muvawala Nsekere, Second Deputy prime minister Owek. Noor Osman Ahmed, and Owek. Prince Amin Bbosa Nkono, the Busoga Kingdom Sports Minister.
Other prominent guests included Owek. Babirye Yudaya, Minister for Kyabazinga Affairs, officials from MTN Uganda, FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo Hashim Isabirye, Tournament Organizing Committee Chairperson Isa Magoola, former Uganda Cranes captain Isaac Masinde Onyango, and various club officials.
This year’s tournament is being played under the powerful theme: “Men are the Pillars (Abasaadha n’Empango) in Preventing Early Child Marriages and Teenage Pregnancy.”The theme seeks to promote male engagement in safeguarding the rights and future of young girls across Busoga.
Opening Match: Bukono Stuns Hosts Budiope
After the formalities, action on the pitch kicked off with a thrilling opening fixture between Bukono and Budiope. Despite being away from home, Bukono FC impressed the crowd with a well-organized performance, defeating the hosts 2-0 a similar result against the same side in last editions quarter final at Kyabazinga stadium Bugembe.
Emmanuel Nabola opened the scoring in the 61st minute, and Abel Muwola, coming off the bench, sealed the victory with a clinical finish deep into stoppage time.
The result places Bukono top of Mawembe Hill group after Matchday 1 with 3 points, while Budiope, Bugweri, and Bunhole Bunhanumba remain on 0 points.
