SECURITY INTERVENES: Kamuli NRM candidates warned over campaign violence, new directives issued

Following a disturbing surge in violent incidents during the ongoing National Resistance Movement (NRM) primary campaigns, security operatives have swiftly intervened, holding a crucial meeting with aspiring Members of Parliament for Kamuli Municipality.

The urgent gathering, aimed at curbing further unrest and ensuring a peaceful electoral process, was chaired by the Resident District Commissioner (RDC). Key security figures in attendance included the Regional Police Commander (RPC) for Busoga North, the District Internal Security Officer (DISO), and the District Police Commander (DPC) Kamuli, along with her team.

The meeting was prompted by several reports of unrest, including cases of assault and malicious damage to vehicles, which have marred the otherwise democratic process in recent days.

Candidates were sternly urged to exert greater control over their supporters, emphasizing the need to avoid chaos and refrain from provoking opponents. This crucial message was re-echoed by the RPC, who stressed the importance of maintaining law and order throughout the campaign period.

To mitigate further conflict and restore order, the meeting resolved on several key directives for all participating candidates:

  • Campaign End Time: Each candidate must conclude their campaigns by 6:00 PM.
  • Vehicle Limit & Processions: Processions are strictly prohibited, with a maximum of three campaign vehicles allowed per candidate.
  • Regulation of “Political Shrines”: Candidates are required to regulate activities at locations colloquially referred to as “political shrines,” which have sometimes been flashpoints for confrontation.
  • Avoid Central Business Areas: Campaign activities are to be kept out of the central business areas to minimize disruption and potential clashes.

Ensuring adherence to these new guidelines, ASP Kasadha Micheal, the Regional Spokesperson for Busoga North, reiterated the security operatives’ firm commitment to upholding the law. “All people found culpable will be prosecuted,” Kasadha stated, underscoring the serious consequences for those who instigate or participate in violence.

The intervention by the security forces aims to foster a more peaceful and respectful campaign environment, allowing voters in Kamuli Municipality to exercise their democratic right without fear or intimidation ahead of the NRM primaries.
