You cannot have warmth in the bedroom when there is coldness in the living room. The truth is, intimacy begins long before you enter the bedroom.
1. Intimacy Begins With Emotional Safety
If she does not feel emotionally safe, she may struggle to be physically open.
If he does not feel respected, valued and appreciated, he may begin to withdraw.
The heart needs to feel safe before the body can truly feel close.
2. Intimacy Begins With Small Acts of Kindness
It is not always about grand romantic gestures. Sometimes, intimacy is built through the little things: sending a kind message in the middle of the day, helping without being asked, saying “thank you,” listening without interrupting, apologising when you are wrong or even sending money for lunch simply because you thought about your spouse.
Small acts communicate a powerful message:“I see you. I value you. I care about you.”
3. Intimacy Begins With Friendship
Many couples have stopped being friends. They are co-parents. They are co-managers of the household. They share bills, responsibilities and schedules.
But somewhere along the way, they stopped enjoying each other’s company.
When friendship dies, intimacy begins to struggle.Talk. Laugh. Play. Spend time together. Be curious about each other again.
Your spouse should not only be the person you built a home with; they should also be someone you genuinely enjoy having in your life.
4. Intimacy Begins With Honour — in Public and in Private
How do you speak about your spouse when they are not around? How do you speak to them when you are angry?
Intimacy is slowly destroyed by constant criticism, comparison, insults and contempt.
You cannot continually wound someone with your words and expect them to remain emotionally open to you.
Protect your spouse’s dignity, both in public and behind closed doors.
5. Intimacy Begins With God at the Centre
For couples who share faith, God should not be an occasional visitor in the relationship. He should be at the centre.
But having Jesus at the centre does not eliminate the need for intentional effort.
We need both: God at the centre and intentional love in the everyday moments.
Pray together. Forgive each other. Serve one another. Choose kindness. Keep learning how to love each other well.
Check the Temperature of Your Hearts
So, before you complain about the coldness in the bedroom, check the temperature of your hearts during the day.
How do you speak to each other?
How do you treat each other?
How often do you show appreciation?
How safe does your spouse feel with you?
If you want more warmth at night, create more warmth during the day.
Intimacy is not created by what happens in the bedroom alone.
It is built in the heart, nurtured throughout the day and expressed in the bedroom.
